My Best Computer Died

Pretty much… all the audio ports front and back are broken and the case won’t go back on because it’s bent. This happened a month or two ago… I still haven’t thrown it out but only because I haven’t gotten to it.

It was an i3 10th gen. Now I’ve replaced it with a i5 6th gen which can’t run Windows 11 so I’m running Windows 10 on my main machine now.

I have two other desktops and a laptop… one desktop has Windows 10 also and one has Debian 13, and the laptop has Windows 11.

The other desktop is better… i7 7th gen but my better video card doesn’t work in it so it’s in the 6th gen i5.

The 6th gen i5 has a RX 6400 and the i7 7th gen has a GT 1030.

I hate this RX 6400 in a way… it doesn’t seem to have any VGA hardware, so the whole boot process isn’t shown until (if) a graphical display mode is set like the login screen of Windows 10 (that’s the first thing I see…)

EDIT: There’s a glitch caused by one of the broken audio ports, so audio doesn’t work at all. It’s like a device keeping getting plugged and unplugged or something… sound will play for like 10 milliseconds or whatever and then the audio stream will stop. In Windows Media Player if I click play over and over, it sort of plays the song, screwed up.

I stripped everything I could from it… CPU… RAM… drives… just going to throw it out because motherboards for these are expensive and it’s not an easy install…

These machines would be perfectly fine if they were able to run Windows 11… they have a fucktonne of RAM and are fast enough for anything I do… but I’m not messing with non-standard ways to install Windows 11 or anything like that…

The 6th and 7th gen have 64 GB of RAM and the other one which is a 4th gen i5 running Debian has 32 GB of RAM.

The laptop is a “10th gen i5” but it’s slow as hell… but it’s still good enough for what I do, and it has up-to-date OS… so it’s pretty good. But I don’t normally like using laptops…

I also have a mini-PC I don’t use that I bought for $192 on Amazon… it has Windows 11 Pro but that thing is a piece of shit… buyer beware on those mini PCs… they’re cheap for a reason…

The $100 used SFF PC I bought on Kijiji is running Debian and has been used consistently for 5 years by me alone… far better than a mini PC.

I had 4 different generations of HP EliteDesk 800 SFF PCs, now I have 3. The older ones are my favourite, the case comes on and off with easy, there’s a lot of room inside… they’re built tougher… Gen 1 and Gen 2 EliteDesk 800 SFF are really great… but they’re outdated unfortunately… I have Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3. My Gen 6 is what broke.

The one that broke, gave me OCD anyway… I bought them all used… and that one came with a BIOS password on it that couldn’t be removed…………… major OCD for someone like me………………

I will be paying the $30 or whatever to extend Windows 10 lifetime another year… maybe I’ll be able to find something Windows 11 I can afford between now and Windows 10 EOL… if not, I still have a laptop and mini-PC I can use (ick…)

Memory is cheap for these old fuckers, so the three of them have the max supported amount.

The only thing I’ve upgraded on my laptop is adding a DVD drive. I had to check eBay for a few months until a bezel came up, bought it, and installed a DVD drive. It came with and still has 12 GB of RAM which is fine…

It’s a pretty cheesy laptop, but it supports Linux 100% and it’s 17 inch which I find anything smaller hard to read… so I still haven’t thought about replacing it, because 8 times out of 10 I’ll get something shittier anyway…

I have OCD, and there’s nothing that sets it off with this laptop… so I don’t even WANT to replace it, because I know laptops… almost every one has something that sets off my OCD… I fucking hate laptops……. usually. It’s a low end brand name generic laptop with no gimmicks or bugs… I’m hanging onto this fucker. If you offered me a Macbook Pro or some shit, I’d turn it down…
